Social Media, the New News Anchor

I feel like my last post was a little serious, so I am going to try to make this one a little more lighthearted. But this is a serious topic and I don’t want to offend anyone, so this is my DISCLAIMER: THE FOLLOWING POST IS ABOUT RELIGION AND CONTAINS MY PERSONAL VIEWS. Thanks.

So, with that out of the way, I was laying in my bed at about 1 a.m. on Monday morning and of course I was checking Twitter. You can read all about my Twitter Do’s and Don’ts in a previous post here. But, as I was scrolling through my news feed, I saw someone had tweeted that the Pope was resigning.

I brushed this off because obviously this person was wrong, but it did stick with me. I woke up on Monday morning to find that this person was completely right! Pope Benedict is stepping down and he announced it in a minor speech before the Vatican then published a press release stating the Holy Father would be stepping down for health related issues.

This is a big deal. The last pope to step down voluntarily was Celestine V in 1294. The last pope to resign was Gregory XII in 1415 and he did so under pressure to end the Western Schism.

Pope Gregory XII

Obviously a pope stepping down doesn’t happen very often. But what really shocked me was that I found out about it on social media, specifically Twitter. Now, I have my personal and professional Twitter accounts and I found that when I followed news Twitters on my personal account my feed got bogged down with quite a lot of tweets. But this tweet wasn’t even from @cnnbrk which is CNN’s handle for breaking news.

Maybe I am coming late to this realization, but Twitter has completely replaced my need for TV News or newspapers. I mean newspapers are going the way of the dinosaur anyway so I knew that already, but this was the first time that I found out about a major event through Twitter first before anything else.

This realization just serves to reinforce the fact that social media is more important than ever, especially for my generation. I can’t remember the last time I sat down and watched CNN of FoxNews. Hears to hoping that this need for more social media savvy will get me a job when I graduate from college!

Here are some hilarious pope memes…some of them might be a little bit offensive, but my Statistics professor showed us them in class and I thought a few were pretty funny.

Side note: If you haven’t ever watched Game of Thrones you should, it is awesome

If any of you reading have also never seen Star Wars you should go out and watch that immediately as well.

Hope those didn’t super offend anyone and maybe brought a little chuckle to your day. As always feel free to follow me on Twitter @Amelia_Power and I leave you with the following picture….
